Report by Nana POKU
The Electoral Commission (EC) has stated that the Ghana Police Service is unable and has failed to
provide it with adequate security to recollate results in nine (9) disputed constituencies.
She has therefore called on the outgoing and incoming presidents to offer security at disputed electoral
centers in some nine (9) constituencies in the country to be enable it to collate the outstanding results.
The Chairperson of the Commission, Madam Jean Addoquaye Mensah, briefed the media about a
decision the Commission has taken to re-collate the disputed constituencies to complete the declaration
cycle of the just ended general elections in the country.
The EC attributed the challenge to the vandalisation of some pink sheets, electoral materials, and
threatening of electoral officers.
She also indicated that some party supporters and executives besieged the collation centers making
collation impossible and dangerous.
"In some cases we were forced to declare the verdict for a particular candidate’s failure, of which the
EC officers in question were beaten, heckled, or chased out of the centre,” she stated.
“Some pink sheet were destroyed or withheld to thwart the collation,” she alleged.
She stated that as a Commission, they did not want to take sides but wanted to do a clean, clear,
transparent and fair election without helping any candidates.
The nine outstanding constituencies are Nsawam, Okaikoi Central, Tema Central, Takyiman North, Ahafo
Ano South, Dome Kwabenya, Obuasi East, and Ablekuma North.
The EC therefore appealed to the outgoing and incoming presidents to help with security to address the
impasse before or after the New Year.
This is because the Police have failed to fail to give the necessary protection to enable EC officials to do
the collation.
The Chairperson postulated that but for the behavior of party supporters and their executive; the results
would have been ready and declared long ago.
The Chairperson said election observers and the international communities have praised the Commission
for a good work and placed Ghana in a high pedestal in as far as elections are concerned.
She promised that as soon as the bottlenecks are cleared, she will declare the winners accordingly and
bring peace to the country.
