The fatal incident occurred on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at approximately 8:00 p.m., when two police officers were travelling from Widnaba towards Zebilla. According to preliminary accounts, the officers unexpectedly came upon an armed robbery in progress along the stretch of road.

Reports indicate that upon noticing the presence of the police, the assailants opened fire, striking one of the officers. The wounded officer, whose identity has not yet been officially released, was rushed to the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital by a responding police team after a distress call was raised. He was, however, pronounced dead on arrival.

In a statement issued by the Regional Police Command, authorities confirmed that a comprehensive investigation has been launched into the incident. The command also announced the deployment of a special security operation aimed at tracking down and apprehending all individuals connected to the attack.

The police assured the public of their resolve to bring the perpetrators to justice and appealed to residents, particularly those living along the Zebilla–Widnaba corridor, to cooperate with security agencies by volunteering any information that could aid the investigations.

Despite the growing security challenges affecting sections of major road networks in the region, the command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property within the Bawku Division and surrounding communities, pledging intensified patrols and enhanced security measures to curb criminal activity.
