The Ghana Police Service has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing campaign against narcotics trafficking after officers of the Bole District Police Command intercepted 73 parcels of a substance suspected to be cannabis during a routine highway operation in the Savannah Region.
The operation, which occurred along the Banda Nkwanta to Teslima road, resulted in the arrest of two suspects after police officers stopped and searched a commercial vehicle travelling from Techiman towards Wa.
According to the Police Service, the interception was made during a routine inspection exercise when officers noticed irregularities surrounding the contents of some luggage being transported in the vehicle.
The vehicle, identified by its registration number AS 4874 25, was subjected to a detailed search after officers detected inconsistencies that raised suspicion.
A thorough examination of the luggage reportedly uncovered 73 carefully concealed parcels containing a substance believed to be cannabis.
The discovery has heightened concerns among security authorities over the continued movement of illegal narcotics through major transportation routes and the possible links between drug trafficking networks and other criminal activities.
The driver of the commercial vehicle and a woman believed to be in her early 40s, who allegedly claimed ownership of the consignment, were arrested and taken into custody to assist investigators with the ongoing inquiry.
Police sources indicate that the female suspect allegedly admitted responsibility for transporting the suspected cannabis to Sengye, a community located near Bole.
Investigators are currently examining the circumstances surrounding the intended destination, with preliminary suspicions suggesting possible links to illegal mining activities in the area. However, authorities have stressed that further investigations are required before any conclusions can be reached regarding the final purpose of the consignment.
The Police Service also disclosed that the suspects allegedly attempted to offer officers a GH¢300,000 bribe in an effort to secure their release after the discovery was made.
The officers, according to the police, rejected the alleged inducement and proceeded with the arrest, reinforcing the service’s position that corruption will not be tolerated in efforts to combat organised crime.
The two suspects remain in police custody as investigators continue gathering evidence, while the suspected narcotic substance is expected to undergo forensic examination to establish its exact composition.
Authorities have indicated that the outcome of the laboratory analysis will guide the next legal steps, including the possibility of criminal charges and prosecution before the courts.
The seizure forms part of broader national security operations aimed at disrupting the trafficking, transportation and distribution of illicit drugs across Ghana.
The Ghana Police Service has intensified intelligence led operations and highway monitoring efforts as part of measures to identify and dismantle networks involved in narcotics related offences.
The service has also renewed its appeal to members of the public to provide credible information that can assist law enforcement agencies in preventing drug trafficking and other organised criminal activities.
In a statement, the police emphasised that investigations into the matter remain active and that the suspects will be presented before a court once the necessary procedures are completed.
The Police Service further reminded the public that all persons arrested in connection with criminal allegations are presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
The interception of the suspected cannabis consignment represents another significant test for Ghana’s security institutions as authorities continue efforts to protect communities from the social and economic consequences associated with illegal drug distribution.
The case will now move into the investigative and judicial stages, where evidence gathered by law enforcement agencies will determine the next course of action.
