The deceased suspects, identified as Sumaila Munkaila, widely known as Guda, and Umaro Musah, were tracked from Tamale through intelligence driven operations spanning the Ashanti, Northern, and Upper East regions.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday April 28 2026, Ashanti South Regional Police Commander Joseph Hammond Nyaaba disclosed that the suspects had been linked to several armed robberies, including a July 2025 attack targeting the convoy of Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam, the Chiana Pio and a member of the Council of State.

According to the Commander, Munkaila admitted involvement in multiple highway robberies along key routes such as the Buipe to Tamale corridor and the Yizesi to Fumbisi stretch, areas that have recorded a surge in violent criminal activity in recent months.

He explained that the suspects subsequently guided investigators to a bush location near Yizesi, where firearms allegedly used in the operations had been buried.

During the retrieval exercise, however, the police team reportedly came under gunfire from unidentified individuals believed to be accomplices of the group. The suspects had earlier identified four collaborators, namely Tongude, Sumaila, and Berra, in addition to Umaro Musah, who was later apprehended at Savelugu at approximately 23 30 hours on the same night.

Police indicated that both suspects confirmed that their weapons had been concealed underground near Yizesi after their most recent robbery along the Yizesi to Fumbisi route.

The Commander further stated that on April 26 2026, officers returned to the location to continue the retrieval operation when they were ambushed. During the exchange of gunfire, the two suspects attempted to flee, prompting officers to respond. Both individuals sustained gunshot wounds in the process, while one police officer also suffered injuries and is currently receiving treatment.

A follow up search of the area resulted in the recovery of a pump action shotgun with ammunition, a single barrel firearm, and four jackets believed to have been used during the criminal activities.

The police have intensified efforts to apprehend the remaining members of the group, including individuals identified as Tongude, Sumaila, and Berra, who are currently evading arrest.
