The Ashanti Regional Police Command has announced temporary road closures, traffic diversions and strict parking controls around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s National Delegates Conference and national officers elections scheduled for Saturday, October 3, 2026.
The Police said the arrangements are intended to safeguard the public, regulate vehicular movement and support security operations during the conference, which is expected to attract delegates, party officials, supporters and other participants from across the country.
The Head of the Ashanti Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, has urged motorists and members of the public who intend to travel through the area to plan their journeys in advance and comply with instructions issued by officers deployed along the affected routes.
Three roads leading towards the stadium will be temporarily closed to vehicular traffic. They are the stretch from Bridginia Traffic Lights to Carvery Methodist Church, the route from Unity Oil Fuel Station to T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School, and the stretch linking Is My Kitchen Restaurant with Bridginia Traffic Lights.
The Command has also outlined alternative routes to help maintain the movement of traffic during the restrictions. Commercial vehicles travelling from Amakom will proceed directly towards Asokwa, while vehicles approaching from Asafo will be diverted at Bridginia Traffic Lights towards either Asokwa or Amakom Traffic Lights.
Commercial vehicles travelling from LLL towards T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School will instead proceed towards Amakom Traffic Lights. Vehicles travelling from Kumasi City Mall towards Afful Nkwanta Junction will be redirected through Bulldog Restaurant, while traffic approaching from Afful Nkwanta will continue towards Kumasi City Mall.
The Police said specially designated parking arrangements agreed with the NPP Elections Committee would also be enforced throughout the event.
The VVIP Car Park has been reserved for former Presidents and the NPP Presidential Candidate. Members of Parliament, former MPs, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives and Chief Executive Officers will use the Scoreboard Parking Area.
Regional delegates arriving by bus and National Party Executives will park at Heroes Park, while official police vehicles will be stationed at the Hockey Pitch.
The Command said all delegates and vehicles attending the conference must be properly accredited. Only accredited individuals and vehicles will be permitted into designated areas, while motorists have been instructed to display their accreditation clearly and comply with directives from officers managing access.
The Motor Traffic and Transport Department will deploy personnel at strategic locations to regulate traffic and enforce the temporary arrangements. Towing trucks will also be positioned around the affected area to remove vehicles that are wrongly parked or abandoned.
Vehicles removed during the operation will be taken to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly yard at the owners’ expense.
The Police have cautioned motorists against attempting to bypass roadblocks, parking in unauthorised areas or obstructing routes designated for traffic movement.
The Command has consequently appealed to motorists, delegates, party supporters and members of the public to use alternative routes, avoid unnecessary travel through the stadium area and make appropriate arrangements before the conference begins.
The NPP’s National Officers Elections Committee has said the conference and elections are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m. on October 3, with delegates expected to arrive in Kumasi from Friday, October 2.
