A group calling itself Unemployed Graduates Network [UGNET] has announced their formation. According to them, the objective of the Network is to partner government, private sector and other agencies to find lasting solutions to the unemployment situation in the country.

This was contained in a release dated 3rd November 2021.

The release, signed by one Selorm Kwame Dzramado, stated that the plight of graduates from various tertiary institutions in Ghana has in recent times moved from bad to worse and there is, sadly to say, no signal it will get any better in the foreseeable future.

The ‘plight’ of the graduates, apparently, has to do with the fact that there are no ‘salaried’ positions available for them.

The Daily Searchlight is of the mind that it is time people passing out of educational institutions in Ghana were brought to the realization that the days when comfortable clerical jobs awaited each and every individual graduating out of an educational institution, are long past. That phenomenon was as a result of the colonial era, because the colonizers needed clerks. Those days, however, are long past.

It is time our graduates developed entrepreneurial attitudes, and started trying out ventures for themselves.

At the same time, the government should challenge itself to create an enabling environment that nurtures entrepreneurs and leads to individual growth for start-ups. So far, most of what we hear from government amount to insincere lip service, and this is not good enough.
