Editorial (Daily Searchlight of Wednesday, 12th October 2022)
The emerging pictures, videos and other pieces of evidence from the level of destruction of the nation’s eco-system in pursuit of gold is truly frightening.
The destruction of farms, forests, rivers and towns is on a scale that is unprecedented in Ghana, and we dare say on the continent of Africa, and demonstrates the existence of a nation where all law and order has broken down.
Certainly, it is not representative of a modern democratic country with all the institutions in place.
What is happening surely is not a good testimony of our sense of responsibility as a people. The destruction of the environment, at the rate at which it is proceeding, shows that we have lost all sense of responsibility as a people.
We believe that the only way we can gain back our credibility as a people, is to confront this demon, and overcome it, as soon as possible. It is simply a question of them or us as a people, and all good sense would suggest that we choose to protect our environment, and the future.
