The National Identification Authority (NIA) has deployed its Biometric Verification Taskforce to enforce full compliance with the National Identity Register (Amendment) Regulations, 2026 (L.I. 2523) from November 2, 2026. The exercise targets institutions that continue to photocopy or visually inspect Ghana Cards instead of using the approved NIA Identity Verification System Platform.
Under the new regulations, photocopying or manually inspecting a Ghana Card for transaction purposes is now a criminal offence with no exemptions. Institutions found culpable face summary conviction with fines between 500 and 2,000 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢6,000 to GH¢24,000 based on the current GH¢12 per penalty unit, while individuals face fines of GH¢600 to GH¢6,000.The Authority has therefore urged all entities that verify identities to immediately onboard onto its verification platform to ensure secure biometric authentication and avoid prosecution.
