Supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party are mounting renewed calls for former Energy Minister and former Manhyia South Member of Parliament Matthew Opoku Prempeh to be maintained as running mate to former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In a strongly worded tribute to Dr. Opoku Prempeh, legal practitioner Iddi Muhayu Deen described the former minister as one of the governing party’s most valuable political figures, citing his contribution to public service, education reforms, and party mobilization efforts during the 2024 election campaign.

According to him, Dr. Opoku Prempeh distinguished himself in government through his role in the implementation of the Free Senior High School policy under the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo. He further credited the former Energy Minister with helping stabilize Ghana’s power supply and restoring discipline within the petroleum sector during challenging economic conditions.

The statement also defended the performance of the Bawumia-NAPO ticket during the 2024 elections, insisting that post-election assessments did not identify either candidate as responsible for the party’s defeat.

The writer referenced findings from the Oquaye Election Review Committee as well as research conducted by Global Info Analytics and KAS International, which reportedly attributed the electoral loss to factors including incumbency fatigue, unpopular government decisions, weak grassroots engagement, and perceptions surrounding the exercise of political power.

He argued that retaining Dr. Opoku Prempeh as running mate would represent the most strategic decision for the party as it prepares for the 2028 polls, citing his experience in governance, national appeal, campaign energy, and connection with party grassroots.

The tribute further described NAPO as approachable, disciplined, incorruptible, and widely admired across political lines, while highlighting testimonies from individuals who claim to have benefited from his support and leadership.

The article concluded by portraying Dr. Opoku Prempeh as one of the party’s strongest political assets and expressed confidence in his suitability to remain on the presidential ticket in the next electoral cycle.
