…Parents, Guardians Shed Bitter Tears

The decision by the government and authorities at the Ghana School of Law to impose an astronomical fee on Part II students, has led to wailing and gnashing of teeth among students, parents and guardians.

A latest release from the school has hiked up fees for Part II students to a shocking GHc 12,400.00, (twelve thousand, four hundred Ghana cedis only) up from GHc7,400.00 from only last year. The Part II section constitutes the second part of the two-part professional course at the Ghana School of Law.

A latest circular issued by the school, signed by Mrs Juliet Adu-Agyei, Registrar of the school, dated 13th October, sets out the schedule of fees to a wide array of groupings of the same Part II students.

Parents wondered why some Part II students are paying far less, and the justification for extorting the huge sums from the students, numbering in the several hundreds.

Speaking to the Daily Searchlight, some of the parents and guardians wondered whether the President, the government and the authorities at the school were aware of the financial conditions under which even government workers labour. They wondered whether the powers that be are aware of the social factors in Ghana, and take these into cognizance when fixing fees.

They said that the fees being demanded for the course were wholly unreasonable and not in accord with the times.

“How many salaried workers can afford to pay such fees for their wards? Where do the authorities expect students who are paying their own fees to get such monies to pay such fees?”

They said that many salaried workers working for government constitute the best paid workers in Ghana, yet the numerous responsibilities that devolve on such people is only going to be worsened by these fees.

“Is it because we want to tax all future fees out of these students and their parents before we allow them to come onto the field?” they wondered.

The Ghana School of Law has of late come under a lot of umbrage about the manner of its handling, particularly the manner in which the affairs of students are handled.
