One hundred and thirty-eight (138) inmates of the Wa Central Prisons have been enrolled onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The free registration and expired membership reactivation exercise was the collaborative effort of the Wa Municipal NHIS Office, the Regional Command of the Wa Central Prisons and the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development.
Some officials of the Wa Central Prisons and their family relations took advantage of the exercise and registered and also reactivated their expired membership cards.
Staff of the Wa Municipal NHIS Office educated the inmates on the significance of the MyNHIS App and the Mobile Renewal Service platform.
The Wa Municipal NHIS Public Relations Officer Mr, Hudu Sa’ad who supervised the exercise explained the exercise rationale saying, “This useful exercise is one of the many free registrations exercises the NHIS is required to undertake to support a section of the many vulnerable groupings to access free health care delivery.”
“This is a routine exercise which is carried out by the office at any given opportunity and we have no intention of putting a stop to this wonderful initiative.”
The regional commander of the Wa Central Prisons, ADP ING, James B. Mwinyelle thanked the NHIS district management team for the exercise and advised the beneficiaries to be active members of the Scheme.
“The NHIS contribution to Universal Health Coverage is highly commendable and worth emulating,” he stated.
He appealed to other benevolent organizations and philanthropists to assist in alleviating the plight of the inmates.
