Spot gold climbed 1.6 percent to a record-setting $4,748.09 per ounce on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, extending a formidable rally that continues to dismantle long-standing price barriers. The latest advance propels the precious metal deeper into uncharted territory, fuelled by robust investor appetite and sustained bullish sentiment across international markets.

According to market analysts, the surge reaffirms gold’s enduring appeal as a refuge asset and strategic store of value amid heightened global volatility, geopolitical flashpoints, and evolving monetary policy expectations. Heavy trading volumes and strong investor confidence have further entrenched gold’s status as a core component of diversified portfolios, with the magnitude and persistence of recent gains suggesting a structural upward shift rather than a temporary price surge.

As global prices accelerate, Ghana is positioning itself to extract greater economic value from its standing as Africa’s leading gold producer. The country is recalibrating its strategy away from the export of unprocessed bullion toward increased domestic refining, signalling a deliberate effort to secure a stronger presence along the global gold value chain.

Under a newly concluded value-addition arrangement with Gold Coast Refinery Limited, Ghana will begin refining one metric tonne of gold locally each week from February 1, 2026. The programme is expected to enhance foreign exchange earnings, keep refining revenues within the domestic economy, and expand industrial capacity in the precious metals sector.

Industry experts note that the timing of the initiative is particularly advantageous. With gold trading at record highs, Ghana’s move to scale up local refining places the country in a stronger position to optimise revenues, deepen domestic value creation, and lessen dependence on overseas refineries at a moment when global gold markets are delivering exceptional returns and renewed strategic relevance.
