The Ghana Police Service, in conjunction with the Ghana Immigration Service, has apprehended twelve individuals suspected of involvement in organised cybercrime and human trafficking during a coordinated operation carried out earlier this week.
According to an official statement released on Saturday, March 14, the arrests followed a meticulously planned joint operation executed on March 12, 2026. The initiative involved the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, the Surveillance Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters, and personnel from the Ghana Immigration Service.
Authorities reported that six additional Nigerian nationals allegedly linked to migration-related offences remain at large and are being actively sought.
The suspects are believed to have orchestrated a variety of criminal enterprises, combining sophisticated internet-based fraud with illicit human trafficking activities. During the enforcement operation, officers seized twenty-five laptops and seven mobile phones, all of which were allegedly used to facilitate the suspected illegal schemes.
The statement highlighted that the suspects attempted to hinder law enforcement efforts by releasing German Shepherd dogs to intimidate officers. Rapid deployment of reinforcements from both the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team and the CID Surveillance Unit ensured the operation proceeded without incident.
Initial investigations indicate that the detained individuals were involved in an array of cyber offences, including internet fraud, identity theft, phishing scams, mobile money (MoMo) fraud, cyber extortion, blackmail, credit card and ATM fraud, and electronic document forgery. Authorities further noted the increasing convergence between cybercrime networks and transnational human trafficking operations, illustrating the complexity and sophistication of modern criminal enterprises.
The police statement emphasised the critical importance of intelligence gathering and coordinated action across multiple agencies in effectively disrupting these criminal networks.
“The Ghana Police Service remains firmly committed to intelligence-led operations, robust inter-agency collaboration, and strict adherence to the law to protect national security and preserve the integrity of Ghana’s digital and migration environments,” the official brief stated, underscoring the continued prioritisation of public safety and cyber resilience.
Authorities have indicated that investigations are ongoing, and further updates are expected as the inquiry into the cyber and human trafficking networks progresses.
