Ghana and Russia have reached an agreement to collaborate on the construction of a 2,000-megawatt nuclear power facility aimed at enhancing Ghana’s energy security and accelerating industrial growth. The understanding was reached during engagements at the Russia-Africa Summit, as announced by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on Saturday via X. The development follows an announcement by Russia’s state-owned nuclear firm, Rosatom, that it is negotiating large-scale nuclear projects with four African nations, including Ghana.

Beyond energy, both countries committed to deepening defence ties through a new agreement that will provide equipment for Ghana’s Armed Forces. Minister Ablakwa also disclosed that Russian President Vladimir Putin has prohibited the involvement of Ghanaian nationals in Russia’s conflict in Ukraine, whether through irregular recruitment or voluntary service. The cooperation package further includes assistance for Ghana’s agricultural sector and expanded educational scholarships for Ghanaian students in Russia, in line with Moscow’s broader strategy to strengthen economic partnership with Africa since the inaugural Russia-Africa Summit in 2019.
