Accra, June 11, GNA – Madam Elizabeth Kaakie Mann, Chief Executive, Ga East Municipal Assembly (GEMA), has urged residents to nurture trees planted to maturity to help enhance human survival amidst climate change effects.

She said trees offered several social, economic and environmental benefits to humans, birds and mammals like food, protection, and homes.

The Municipality distributed 8,000 tree seedlings to residents to plant to mark the Green Ghana Day Campaign initiated by President Nana Akufo- Addo.

Madam Elizabeth Kaakie Mann, appealed to locals not to see the initiative as a single day activity but replicate it on regular basis to ensure its desired impact.

“Let us be responsible towards our environment and respect it for own sake and future generations by taking good care of The trees that we are planting today,” she stated.

The Forestry Commission provided the Assembly seedlings of Cedrela, Acacia, Mahogany, Ofam, Teak, Coconut, and Citrus (Orange & Tangerine), Mango, among others.

Madam Jennifer Stevens, Forest Range Manager, Amasaman, said, their focus this year was to monitor the trees and ensure individuals grew and nurtured them.

Various stakeholders and individuals, including members of the Assembly, traditional authorities, women and youth groups, and some members of the public, joined the MCE in the exercise at the premises of the Boi Clinic in Abokobi.

The “Green Ghana Day” initiative is under the leadership of the President and forms part of the Government’s aggressive afforestation programme to restore the lost forest cover and contribute to the global efforts to fight climate change.

It is also intended to create enhanced national awareness on the necessity for collective action towards the restoration of degraded landscapes in the country and inculcate in the youth the values of planting and nurturing trees.

This year’s exercise on the theme: “Mobilizing for a Greener Future,” targets at least 20 million tree seedlings across the country, at a cost of GHS9.6 million.
