A tragic fuel tanker explosion at Adubinsu in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region has resulted in the deaths of a driver and his mate, following a violent crash that triggered a major fire outbreak in the early hours of Thursday, June 4, 2026.
The incident reportedly occurred when the tanker was travelling from Edwenase towards Adubinsu and the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to suspected brake failure. The tanker is said to have somersaulted before erupting into flames, setting off a fire that rapidly spread to nearby structures.
According to an eyewitness, Daniel Owusu, the driver, identified as Abass Toure and a resident of Adubinsu, died instantly in the inferno following the explosion.
He further disclosed that the mate of the vehicle sustained severe burn injuries and was rushed to the Tafo Government Hospital for emergency treatment but was later confirmed dead.
The raging fire destroyed six container shops situated along the roadside and also consumed a nearby residential structure, leaving significant property loss in its wake.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Police Service were quickly deployed to the scene to contain the blaze and restore order in the affected area.
Confirming the incident, the Mamponteng Fire Commander, DOII Akua Brago, stated that the Ghana National Fire Service received the distress call at 12:05 a.m. and arrived at the scene by 12:25 a.m., where firefighters worked swiftly to bring the fire under control and prevent it from spreading further.
She confirmed that seven container shops were completely destroyed in the fire, while a Ford vehicle parked near a house was also gutted by the blaze.
Local sources indicated that arrangements are underway for the burial of the deceased driver in accordance with Islamic tradition.
The tragedy has plunged the Adubinsu community into mourning as residents grapple with the sudden loss of lives and extensive destruction of property, while authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage and investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
