The family of 29-year-old civil engineer Jeffrey Boakye Danquah is calling for justice following his alleged shooting and killing by a military officer, as the suspect appeared before the Akropong District Court for a second time on Monday.
Relatives, led by the deceased’s sister, Gifty Serwaa, gathered at the court premises to follow proceedings in the case involving Private Nsarkoh Christopher Nkyinkyi, who is accused of firing the fatal shot during an incident at a military facility in Kumasi.
The emotional scenes outside the courtroom reflected growing public concern among the family, with some members expressing anger toward the accused before police officers intervened to restore calm.
According to prosecution details presented in court, the incident occurred weeks ago at the Ghana Armed Forces Central Command Headquarters in Kumasi following an altercation between the accused soldier and the deceased. The confrontation reportedly escalated, culminating in the discharge of an M16 rifle at close range.
Prosecutors told the court that the bullet struck the victim in the chest and exited through his back, leading to his death.
The court was also informed that investigations into the matter are at an advanced stage. However, military authorities have reportedly not yet produced the rifle alleged to have been used in the shooting, despite a prior court directive requiring its submission.
Presiding judge His Lordship Emmanuel Wiafe Adu ordered that Private Nkyinkyi remain in custody at the Central Command Headquarters in Kumasi as investigations continue. The court further adjourned the case to June 22, 2026.
ASP Jonas Newlove Adjei, Crime Officer at the Suntreso Police District Command and prosecutor in the case, indicated satisfaction with the adjournment, noting that ongoing investigations are expected to help establish the full facts of the matter for a comprehensive determination.
The family, however, maintains that they are seeking accountability and justice, insisting that the outcome of the case should serve as a deterrent to security personnel and reinforce the importance of restraint and professionalism in the discharge of duty.
As proceedings continue, attention remains fixed on the court’s handling of the case and the completion of investigations, particularly the retrieval of the alleged weapon, which prosecutors say is critical to establishing the full circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
