The immediate past District Chief Executive of Banda District Assembly is seeking collaboration with
traditional authorities in the area to enact by-laws to combat bushfires during the dry season.
The call is aimed at recording zero fire within the area to prevent destruction that caused to the
environment and properties and individuals.
Honourable Emmanuel Akonneh made the call in an interview with Wenchi-based Radio West
Africa’sNana Anfreh Damanata on Friday morning.
He said the devastating effects of bushfires on their cashew and other foodstuffs were enormous and
thus required stringent measures and decisive action to control and prevent its occurrence.
These by-laws will help regulate bushfires. It will let the inhabitants know that there is a law combating
bushfires, that when you set a fire on a bush and you are arrested there is a punitive measure against
you, and if you also fail to report perpetrators, you will also be arrested and prosecuted.
He therefore appealed to traditional authorities to desist from intervening when the security services
arrest people who would flout the law and set fire to bushes.
The immediate past DCE revealed that cashew production was a lucrative economic venture which has
potential to fetch and add to the country's foreign exchange earnings and appealed to the government to
look back and support the farmers.
