The political and personal relationship between President Donald Trump and billionaire business owner Elon Musk has long sparked interest and suspicion. The pair have had a relationship characterised by uneasy alliances, bust-ups and public shows of affection; but it’s often held as a neat case study of the transactional nature of certain sorts of relationship in the modern world see also: politics, business.

This piece of article looks at the broader dynamics of what was discussed between the pair, exploring the themes of betrayal, trust and what happens when short-term impulse runs ahead of long-term strategic thinking. The article, by examining their relationship, has its sights set on lessons for human beings and nations in the need for loyalty and trust and the price of betrayal.

The Trump-Musk Relationship: A History of Alliances and Disagreements

Elon Musk and Donald Trump first met during Trump’s presidency, in 2017. Musk accepted spots on a number of White House advisory committees, such as one that focused on “manufacturing jobs,” indicating a willingness to work with the administration. However, circumstances deteriorated rapidly following Trump’s announcement of the United States’ withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accords. Musk publicly condemned the decision, stating, “Climate change is real.”

Elon continued to posit that, Trump does anything that gives us any sense that we may need to find another planet because we won’t be able to effectively live on this one anymore, he is going to put the largest battery product in the world in his backyard and run it 100 percent on renewable energy.

Hell broke loose when one innocent Thursday, after President Trump announced that the U.S. would exit the Paris Climate Accord, Musk dropped the president’s advisory councils, tweeting, ‘‘Am departing presidential councils’’. (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/timelinedonald-trump-elon-musk-feud-from-rivals-to-allies/).

And even with this terrible break up early on, Trump has spoken kindly of Musk in 2020 during a SpaceX launch where he described him as ‘‘one of our great brains’’ saying he had done great things for innovation. (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/timeline-donald-trumpelon-musk-feud-from-rivals-to-allies/)). In my opinion as an observer, I stand to be corrected, it was a time of temporary peace between them, during which there were no real trust or shared values, but only shared interests. Convenient Allies in 2024

Musk became a major donor to the Republican Party by 2024 with donations of almost $300 million to Trump’s campaign. The financial backing represented a drastic departure for Musk, who was previously a supporter of Democratic candidates such as Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. Musk’s endorsement of Trump after an assassination attempt cemented his alliance with him, with Musk publicly declaring “I fully endorse president Trump and wish him a speedy recovery”(https://www.npr.org/2025/06/05/nx-s1-5424686/donald-trump-elon-musk bromance-breakup)).

It was during this time that Musk emerged as a figure in Trump’s inner circle, visiting the Oval Office and helming the Department of Government Efficiency. This to me was always a transactional association, with each using the other to further personal and political interests.

The Public Backlash in 2025

The relationship between Trump and Musk disintegrated in 2025, with public feuds and allegations of bad behaviour. Trump had threatened to eliminate federal subsidies and contracts to Musk’s companies, including Tesla and the space company, SpaceX. “I do love Elon Musk, perhaps he’d come for a weekend if the price was right,” Not wanting to be outdone, Musk responded with unfounded allegations about Trump’s relationship with convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, which exacerbated their feud. Hmm a big blow to Trump

This fallout, though tragic in itself, served as evidence of how precarious a relationship can be if it is based on nothing but convenience and has no foundation of respect or principles. The public nature of their falling out illustrated the perils of transactional alliances to which loyalty can turn into an afterthought. (The married folks can relate well….).

The Big Picture; Trump’s Transactional Attitude toward Relationships

Trump may have had a transactional mindset when it comes to relationships; personal or political. It is reflected in his foreign policy actions, for example in his dealings with Russia that ignored Ukraine and European partners. It’s also because his supporters, some of whom are Congressional Republicans, act in ways that diminish NATO and America’s alliances, prioritizing the expediency of the moment rather than the stability of the decades.(https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/editorials/ukraine-trump-putin-europe-warzelensky-b2697737.html)).

Likewise, so did Trump’s withdrawal from multilateral agreements like the Paris Climate Accords and the Iran Nuclear Deal, which his administration undermined America’s alliances and its reputation around the world. Such choices were motivated by the need to be seen as strong and independent, but often led to isolation and lack of trust (see Foreign Affairs Forum](https://www.faf.ae/home/2025/3/3/the-impact-of-trumps-america-first-ideology-oninternational-relations).

The price of transactionalism

A simple google search defines transactionalism in international relations term as an approach where bilateral exchanges and immediate gains are prioritized over long-term cooperation and shared values.

The damage caused by Trump’s transactional approach goes beyond foreign policy. The Atlantic reported that, at home, he has estranged supporters and lost credibility by failing to deliver on campaign pledges. Even his voters in his second term learned that many of his promises were never thresholds, and his approval rating sank to historic lows.

It is assumed that this behaviour is just one example of a larger lesson we can all learn about the risks of valuing immediate gains over ongoing relationships. In politics as in business and in personal life, when trust and loyalty are lacking stability is compromised and material comes to destroy itself.

Implications for Individuals and Society (Trust and Loyalty)

The dynamic between Trump and Musk is a cautionary tale about the hazards of transactionalism. Convenience alliances, while appearing to be beneficial in the short-run, are unstable and fickle. Trust and loyalty are the basis of lasting relationships, in politics, in business, or in personal life. When people put their own self-interest above common goals or general decency, they risk making enemies and ruining their reputation. This is an important lesson at a time when our personal and professional contacts are more intertwined than ever.

A cry for ethical leadership

The Trump and Musk debacles underscore the value of ethical leadership. Leaders, who lead with integrity and hold people accountable, are significantly more likely to trust and cooperation. On the flip side, leaders who use their position for self-interest risk losing respect and the ability to get things done. Inference

It is fascinating, if depressing, to see the way that the interaction between Trump and Musk sheds light on trust, loyalty and transactionalism. Even as allies of convenience, and public spats, their interaction has underscored the perils of concentrating on short-term transactions rather than enduring relationships. The lessons for individuals and societies should be clear: Trust and loyalty are the core of lasting relationships; opportunism and transactionalism ultimately result in instability and conflict. Through ethical leadership and authentic relationships we will build a more stable, cooperative future. References
