Farmers in Akyem Asene and surrounding communities in the Asene Manso Akroso District of the Eastern Region are calling on government to pay outstanding compensation for farms and crops destroyed during the construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
At a press conference in Akyem Asene, the affected farmers expressed frustration over what they described as government’s neglect, despite several petitions to authorities. They said the road project had destroyed numerous cocoa farms, oil palm plantations and other food crop farms, leaving many households in financial distress.
According to them, more than 200 farmers have been affected by the project, but fewer than 20 have received compensation. They dismissed media reports suggesting that all affected persons had been paid, stressing that such claims do not reflect the reality on the ground, and appealed for urgent intervention to ease their plight.
