Ghanaians who intend to use local poultry products for various meals in this Christmas festivities should be prepared to pay not less than ₵150 for a broiler bird, ₵60 for a spent layer, and ₵40 for a crate of egg, Ghana National Association of Poultry Farmers (GNAPF) has said.
This according to the Association is a result of hikes in prices of feed and a lack of supply of chickens especially broilers to be raised for the festivities for the past two months from their suppliers, Cote D’Ivoire. Checks revealed that currently Day Old Chicken (DOC) is sold for ₵19.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Daily Searchlight’s reporter, Collins Fosu Appiah on ‘Ghana’s Economic Crisis and its Impact on the Poultry Industry’, Bono Regional Organizer of the Association who doubles as Sunyani East Municipal Vice Chairperson, Johnson Yeboah revealed that the challenges they are talking about is not limited to the cost of production but unavailability of day old chickens in the market especially broilers to be raised for the festivities.
“You know this challenges we are talking of is not limited to the cost of production as maybe we are expressing here. Now my checks revealed that day-old chickens are not available, that is the broilers for production this Christmas festivities because we don’t have the hatcheries in the country, we used to have them but they are not operating maybe to the best of their capacity and people are not going for those birds and they used to rely so much on Cote D’Ivoire for some of these DOCs.”
“I heard that they are also trying to feed their poultry farms and for the last two months there hasn’t been supply from Cote D’Ivoire, so implying that we are going to have a serious shortage of broilers this season. So what it means is those who can manage and get or raised some few birds expect a higher increase, especially the spent layers, the eggs, and the broilers the price will definitely go to.”
When pushed as to how much Ghanaians should expect, the National Executive Committee Member revealed, “for spent layer, I’m expecting that it will not be sold below ₵60, because as we speak it has crossed ₵50 mark, egg we are crossing ₵35, we are moving towards ₵40 and the broiler will go for ₵150, because of unavailability of it, that is a fact.”
