MVP winner Sophia Smith opened up the scoring in the fourth minute, shrugging off Current defender Elizabeth Ball outside the box to go one vs. one with goalkeeper Adrianna Franch before finding the back of the net.

After half-time, the Thorns continued to dominate over the Current. The team then extended their lead as the opponents allowed an own goal in the 56th minute, sealing the shutout and record-breaking victory.

Forward Lo’eau LaBonta reflected on the defeat, thanking fans for their continued support.

“I don’t think anyone will sleep on this team anymore. It hurts because Kansas City showed up for sure and we played for them.”

The Current concluded the 2022 regular season in fifth place on the table, reaching the final after defeating OL Reign and the Houston Dash. The team bounced back after the 2021 campaign, coming in last place in the league, earning high praise from head coach Matt Potter.

“Incredibly proud how far we’ve come in a small space of time. This one’s going to hurt, but there’s much to smile about even in this moment.”

The team now heads into the offseason, with months to prepare before the 2023 campaign.
