Pep Guardiola is counting the cost of mounting defensive injuries, with Ruben Dias having endured a particularly horrid time with injury this season.
The Spaniard welcomed both Kyle Walker and John Stones back to training this week, although it would be a risk if either were to start from the off.
Ezri Konsa is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines which could eat into his pre-season preparations after sustaining a ligament injury.
Elsewhere, Kortney Hause is likely to miss out, while winger Leon Bailey is struggling with an ankle problem.
Aston Villa are likely to bunker in and ride a storm of Man City pressure in the early exchanges and they will need Emiliano Martinez to be at his best between the posts.
After agonisingly missing out on Premier League gratification in 2014, Gerrard will be keen to play his part in a potential Liverpool title success, referencing the ‘pressure’ Guardiola’s side will be under on Sunday.
However, containing this City side at the Etihad Stadium is a nigh-on impossible feat for teams outside the traditional top six. Expect the Cityzens to score early to soothe the anxiety.
Prediction: Man City 3-0 Aston Villa
