The National Identification Authority (NIA) has introduced a mobile application to enable individuals and small businesses to verify identities through the Ghana Card biometric system. The solution is designed for users who are unable to meet the requirements for accessing the main NIA verification platform.According to the Director of Corporate Affairs of the NIA, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, the app will provide a straightforward yes-or-no response to confirm a person’s identity. Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Monday, November 2nd, 2026, he explained that access to the main platform requires certification from the Data Protection Commission, a process that may be difficult for individuals and small-scale enterprises.

Mr. Darlas said the mobile app was developed to bridge that gap and make biometric verification accessible to all segments of the population. He assured the public of the app’s security, noting that the Authority has put in place safeguards to prevent identity fraud. The initiative is in line with L.I. 2523, the National Identity Register (Amendment) Regulations, 2026, which extends biometric verification obligations to individuals under Regulations 9A and 9B. Mr. Darlas cited land transactions as an example where parties are required to verify identities biometrically. He added that the application will be launched very soon, as the grace period for compliance ends today, November 2, 2026.
