The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Asiama, has expressed confidence in the performance of the Ghanaian cedi, assuring the public that the local currency is expected to maintain relative stability throughout the Christmas season.
Speaking at the African Virtual Assets Summit (AVAS) 2026 on Monday, November 2, Dr Asiama sought to reassure businesses, importers, traders and consumers amid continuing concerns about fluctuations in the foreign exchange market and their implications for commercial activities and household expenditure.
The central bank governor gave an optimistic assessment of the currency’s anticipated performance during the festive period, insisting that Ghanaians could look forward to a relatively favourable exchange rate environment.
“What I can promise is a good Christmas as far as the exchange rate is concerned. We will have a good Christmas,” he stated.
His remarks come against the backdrop of the latest interbank foreign exchange quotations released by the Bank of Ghana, which indicate that the cedi was trading at GH¢11.6142 to the United States dollar on the buying side and GH¢11.6258 on the selling side.
The central bank’s published reference rates also placed the British pound sterling at GH¢15.5549 for purchases and GH¢15.5704 for sales.
Meanwhile, the euro was quoted at GH¢12.9559 for buying and GH¢12.9678 for selling, reflecting the prevailing exchange rate positions captured in the latest figures.
Dr Asiama’s assurance is particularly significant as businesses and households approach the Christmas period, when demand for imported merchandise, foreign currency and other internationally sourced goods typically attracts heightened attention.
