Newly elected Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, has disclosed that his decision to contest the position was largely influenced by his determination to acquire broader political experience in preparation for what he believes will be a more significant responsibility in the future.

Dr Okoe Boye, who recently secured the Greater Accra regional chairmanship, described his political career as an ongoing journey of learning and development. He explained that his transition from constituency politics to regional leadership was motivated less by the prestige attached to the position and more by the opportunity to acquire practical knowledge that could prove valuable in a future assignment.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Monday, August 17, the former Minister of Health stressed that his decision to contest the position was not driven by a desire to accumulate political titles, enjoy the privileges associated with office or simply add another achievement to his curriculum vitae.

“I see life as a journey of learning,” he said.

Dr Okoe Boye explained that his years of involvement in constituency level politics had exposed him to several important dimensions of political organisation, grassroots mobilisation and leadership. However, he believes that assuming responsibility at the regional level will expose him to a different range of challenges and experiences.

According to him, those experiences will be important in preparing him for a future responsibility that he believes awaits him in his political journey.

He therefore described the regional chairmanship as both an opportunity to serve the NPP in Greater Accra and a platform through which he can deepen his understanding of political leadership at a broader level.

“My biggest motivation for going for regional chairman is not necessarily to occupy the post and enjoy the experience that comes with it and add it to my CV,” Dr Okoe Boye stated.

He explained that his principal motivation was to expand his political experience while making a meaningful contribution to the organisation and development of the NPP throughout the Greater Accra Region.

The newly elected chairman also cautioned against interpreting his tenure purely as an individual stage in his political career. Instead, he said the period would involve close cooperation with constituency executives, party supporters and residents throughout the region.

Dr Okoe Boye maintained that his experience at the constituency level had taught him valuable lessons and that operating at the regional level would provide another opportunity to learn through direct engagement with a wider range of people and organisational structures.

“The biggest motivator is that just as I have learnt so many things from constituency politics, I am convinced that the assignment God has for me in the future, I need to operate at the regional level and pick vital lessons whilst also writing my chapter,” he said.

The former Health Minister said the practical responsibilities associated with regional leadership would provide particularly important lessons. These include coordinating grassroots structures, working with constituency executives, engaging party members and interacting with communities across the Greater Accra Region.

He consequently views the chairmanship as a responsibility through which he can simultaneously contribute to the NPP’s organisational development and equip himself with the experience required for possible future political duties.

Dr Okoe Boye further emphasised that the legacy he intends to establish during his tenure will not be his alone. He said the chapter he hopes to write in Greater Accra will be created collectively through cooperation with constituency executives, party supporters and residents across the region.

“My chapter will be written with constituency executives, with all patriots in Accra, and also Ghanaians in Accra,” he said.

He explained that the relationships, challenges and lessons that emerge from those engagements will constitute an important part of his continued political development.

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman also expressed a firm personal belief that his political journey has not yet reached its final destination. While he did not specify the nature of the future responsibility he anticipates, he indicated that he remains convinced that a significant assignment lies ahead.

“I know in my spirit that there is a big assignment for me,” Dr Okoe Boye said.

His comments position the Greater Accra regional chairmanship not simply as a new political office but as an important stage in his broader leadership journey, with Dr Okoe Boye signalling his intention to use the experience to strengthen the NPP in the region while preparing himself for whatever greater responsibility may emerge in the future.
