The Water Resources Commission has announced that authorities in Burkina Faso could commence a controlled release of water from the Bagre Dam from Tuesday, August 11, 2026, if the reservoir reaches its established trigger level.
In a statement released on Tuesday, August 4, the Commission disclosed that it had received an official update from SONABEL, the organisation responsible for managing the Bagre Dam, indicating that the planned water discharge would only begin if the reservoir level rises to 234.00 metres.
The Commission explained that the water level at the dam was recorded at 232.93 metres as of Tuesday, August 4, with the reservoir currently operating at 62.77 per cent of its total capacity.
“SONABEL plans to commence controlled water spillage from the Bagre Dam from Tuesday, August 11, 2026, if the reservoir water level should reach 234.00 metres,” the Water Resources Commission stated.
The Commission has subsequently advised residents living along the White Volta River and communities located within potentially affected areas to begin taking precautionary steps in anticipation of a possible increase in water levels.
It urged residents and local authorities to remain vigilant and comply strictly with safety instructions issued by Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies together with other relevant state agencies responsible for managing possible impacts.
“Communities along the White Volta River and adjoining areas are advised to take the necessary precautions and adhere to safety guidelines from the local assemblies and the appropriate agencies,” the Commission stated.
The Water Resources Commission assured the public that it is maintaining close surveillance of developments at the Bagre Dam and will continue to provide regular updates as the situation changes.
The possible spillage comes as authorities continue to monitor water levels within the Volta Basin and prepare communities downstream to minimise potential risks associated with increased water flow from the dam.
