The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) says that Coagulated Ideal and Carnation brands of evaporated milk produced by Nestle Ghana Limited for the Ghanaian markets are “not contaminated and dangerous to consumers,” the

Mr. Joseph Yaw Bennie, the acting Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs at the FDA, who stated this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, explained that research conducted by the Authority at Nestle’s manufacturing facility in Tema and analysis of the coagulated product proved that it was not contaminated.

This followed complaints by some consumers of the products on the market.

The FDA said following the complaints it “thoroughly” investigated the product and helped to identify the batches that were affected and directed the Company to recall all the affected products on the market.

The Daily Searchlight vehemently disagrees with the FDA on the position it has adopted on this matter. We wish to ask whether the manufacturer initially expected the tinned milk to ‘coagulate’ over time. However, if the manufacturer did not expect the product to coagulate, then the question must be asked as to the cause for the coagulation.

Needless to state, if one buys a product expecting it to be liquid, one should get the product in a liquid form, and not in any other form.

We expect the FDA to go back and get its act right in this matter, before people are poisoned by this product.

We also believe that Nestle should also have the decency to withdraw its affected product from the market.
