The Public Affairs Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana, Mr William Boateng has emphasized that unless and until there is full and solid security at the embattled Yilo and Manya Krobo enclaves, their workers will not go back to work there.
Speaking to this reporter on the impasse between the company and the people in the disconnected Krobo enclaves, he said the workers have declined to work there until their safety can be fully guaranteed
“It’s not us but the union that has stopped the workers to stay put till sanity and safety is assured. As it is, we cannot endanger the lives of the workers who represent the company and their families,” he said.
He bemoaned the unsavory and unruly conduct of some youth groups who torment the lives of their workers. What was more unpardonable was the gunshots on the lives of military personnel who were detailed there to protect the installation items of the company.
“So if soldiers are being attacked, what happens to our unarmed workers? And until we see total amicable settlement of the misunderstanding,we cannot put our workers live on the chop sticks,” he said.
Mr Boateng indicated that the youth have vandalised their transformers, meters and cables to disabled them charging them for service consumed.
They often times remove the meters to avoid the billing regime to register units consumed”.
“They assured us of an agreement between their forefathers and the first president for non payment of bills as an exchange for their lands for the dam construction. When we challenged them to produce the documents, they couldn’t and for the past 25 years they haven’t been able to prove that pact with the State so for a considerable number of years they have not been paying the requisite bills.”
He mentioned the name of Hon. Ebenezer Tei Larbi an MP in the area as the one allegedly behind the insurrection and violence. According to him the MP is the ring leader who has indoctrinated and mobilised the youth to terrorise the ECG workers to use the power free through illegal connections and non-payment of bills running into several million Ghana cedis.
He added that some residents and the MP are being investigated and would be prosecuted for power theft and violent behavior. He concluded that till a real peaceful, safe, and secure environment is in sight, their workers will not return to the field to work.
