Pep Guardiola has insisted that his Manchester City team are close to mirroring Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United sides due to their domestic dominance.
City will scoop their fourth Premier League title in the last five years as long as they match or better how Liverpool do on the final day of the season – the Citizens host Aston Villa while the Reds are at home to Wolves.
Ahead of Sunday’s finale, Guardiola has stressed just how hard an achievement City are close to competing and that only Ferguson’s United sides could match such a record.
“Of course it would be great [to win four titles in five seasons],” Guardiola said.
“When I arrive and people here say the Premier League is really difficult, the toughest one, everyone wins different ones. Just Sir Alex Ferguson with United could do four in five years.
“When this happens, you realise the magnitude of this United [team] in this period and how they were able to do it many times. We’re close to being a part of that and we have to try to take it.”
Ferguson’s United actually won four titles in five years on three separate occasions during his reign at Old Trafford.
The first came in the first five years following the Premier League’s inauguration, with Blackburn pipping them to the crown in 1995. United then won four out of five from 1999 to 2003 in which Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal disrupted their streak. The third and final time came from 2007 to 2011, with Chelsea taking home the gold in 2010.
