Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos admitted that he was “disgusted” by his side’s 2-1 defeat to Marseille in the Coupe de France.

PSG were knocked out of the competition by Le Classique rivals Marseille at the round of 16 stage thanks to a Ruslan Malinovskyi winner.

Speaking after the game to the press, Marquinhos lamented the mistakes his side made during the 90 minutes and conceded that it’s even more painful to lose to a bitter rival.

“We knew they would do a lot of pressing, we didn’t manage to skip their lines any faster. We made a few mistakes that cost us dearly. We shouldn’t add to it, we know what we need to improve,” the Brazilian, who represented his country at the 2022 World Cup, said.

“It’s a defeat that hurts because it’s a cup match against our great rival. We wanted to come back to Paris with victory and qualification. We have to do better, keep working and go forward.

“It’s time to shut our mouths. We know we have to improve a lot if we want to do good things this season. A lost title shot, it hurts. We’re disgusted.”

Manager Christophe Galtier also spoke of his disappointment at PSG’s exit, stating: “It’s obviously a huge disappointment for my players, for the club and for the fans, but it is what it is. We knew that there would be some happy people and some sad people tonight, and we’re on the wrong end of that this evening.

“Now, we need to look ahead. In three days’ time, we’ve got another important game away to Monaco, so we’ll see how everyone’s doing, recover well and focus on our upcoming games.”
