Manchester City opted to pursue the signing of Erling Haaland despite Harry Kane’s representatives reaching out to them regarding a potential deal earlier in 2022.

Kane attempted to force through a move to Man City in the summer of 2021 but Spurs stood firm and spurned the Premier League champions’ advances for the England captain.

After failing to get the transfer he craved, Kane, like many of his Spurs teammates, struggled to find form in the first half of the season. By the time Antonio Conte arrived at the club in November, he had registered just one goal in the Premier League.

While Tottenham were on the up again, it appears that Kane still hadn’t fully bought into the project. The Times report that in early February, Kane’s camp contacted Man City regarding a transfer once more.

However, the Citizens informed Kane and his party that they would not reignite their interest in him as they had already sounded out Haaland as their number one striker target.

Listen now to 90min’s brand new podcast, Talking Transfers, with Scott Saunders, Graeme Bailey & Toby Cudworth. On this week’s episode the trio discuss Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at Manchester United, Robert Lewandowski and Bayern Munich, Raphinha and Steven Gerrard’s desire to reunite with Luis Suarez at Aston Villa.

Man City confirmed that they had reached an agreement to sign Haaland earlier in May, following in the footsteps of his father, Alf-Inge, to represent the club.

Kane, meanwhile, ironically put in one of his best ever performances against Man City later in the same month that his camp had contacted them in – a last-gasp 3-2 win at the Etihad Stadium. His form has picked up too, with only teammate Son Heung-min scoring more Premier League goals since Conte’s appointment at Tottenham.
