West Ham defender Kurt Zouma has been banned from owning a pet for five years as part of his punishment for kicking his cat in a video filmed by his brother.

Zouma kicked his cat across a room before throwing a shoe at the animal and hitting it over the head, with the Frenchman heard saying: “I swear I’ll kill it.”

As a result, Zouma has now been hit with a five-year ban from owning an animal and he has also been ordered to undertake 180 hours of community service, with judge Susan Holdham describing his actions as “disgraceful and reprehensible”.

The West Ham defender had pleaded guilty to two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to a cat, with his two Bengal cats later signed over to be re-homed.

Zouma’s brother Yoan, who sent the video to a woman he was set to go on a date with, admitted one count of aiding, abetting, counselling or procuring the West Ham man to commit the offence.

Unsurprisingly, his attempt at seduction didn’t work either, with the woman in question responding: “I don’t think hitting a cat like that is OK. Don’t bother coming today.”

RSPCA chief inspectorate officer Dermot Murphy said in a statement: “We hope this case will serve as a reminder that all animals deserve to be treated with kindness, compassion and respect, and that we will not tolerate cruelty by anybody.”
