Tema, June 01, GNA – The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Tema Regional Command on Wednesday, sensitized traders in the Tema Metropolis on the need to observe fire safety protocols.
The exercise forms part of the 2022 National Fire Safety week campaign which is on the theme: “Safer environment; the way to investment.”
The Fire Officers stormed the markets, shops, and institutions within the Tema Metropolis to sensitize the traders, officers, and residents on the need to protect themselves in the environment.
As part of the campaign, the Fire Officers posted fire educational flyers on some buildings and shops to serve as a reminder of some key safety measures.
Divisional Officer Grade III Nancy Amaka of the GNFS Tema Regional Safety Department told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Tema that the campaign seeks to empower the residents, traders, and public on the need to adhere to safety measures, which is a shared responsibility.
DOIII Amaka urged the market people to contact the firefighters during outbreaks to prevent further damage, stressing that the reason for embarking on this programme was to get closer to the residents to educate them on fire precautions.
She said, “we want to be visible in public space to ensure that the fire safety message is spread across not only through the mainstream traditional media or social media”.
She mentioned that safety was a shared responsibility and education to the public would enlighten them on some malpractices that can lead to fire outbreaks.
She advised the market women to ensure that they put out all fires at the market after using it for any intended purpose and before leaving the market at the close of the day to make sure that all fires are completely off.
DOIII Amaka said, “we are also entering into their homes, with the safety message, cautioned people of the dangers associated with using leaking gas cylinders, simply gas cylinders with any problem at must not be used, and avoid illegal electrical connections.”
She cautioned queen mothers to regularly speak to the market women from time to time to prevent any outbreaks as well as buy fire extinguishers for the market.
