Enhance systems to strengthen WASH projects – Water Aid

Water Aid Ghana, A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) has held its national project startup meeting with the call on stakeholders in the WASH space to strengthen systems and measures to enhance projects under Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) across the country.

According to the NGO, effective monitoring, coordination and evaluation must be adequately put in place in the WASH value chain for smooth delivery of projects for sustainable growth and development.

Participants at the meeting include representatives from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health (MoH), Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Ministry of Finance, and Community Water and Sanitation Agency.

The Head of Programmes at Water Aid, Mr. Jesse Coffie Danku said measures and initiatives are been implemented by the NGO to scale up community water projects as well as resource personnel to effectively and efficiently manage and sustain the WASH systems and projects in their various jurisdictions.

According to him, the strengthening of systems, will open up for interventions to find lasting solutions to projects and issues in communities been supported with WASH projects.

Mr. Danku recalled the absence of effective delivery and maintenance culture that has impacted negatively on WASH projects and therefore urged stakeholders to collectively work together to achieve the primary purpose of projects in their respective communities.

He added that WASH projects running for a two year period is being undertaken at Bongo in the Upper East Region and forms part of the drive to help address challenges of WASH activities in the area.

Mr. Yaw Atta Arhin, Chairperson of the Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS) called for intensive advocacy, capacity building and information flow on all WASH activities at the community level and explained that the gesture will give a deeper understanding of community rights to water.

He therefore commended stakeholders for the programme adding that it will build capacities for effective monitoring and evaluation of projects to sustain WASH projects across the country.
