Angel City and USWNT forward Christen Press has confirmed that the knee injury she suffered during Sunday’s NWSL match against Racing Louisville is a torn ACL.
Press, a two-time World Cup winner with the national team and back in the NWSL this season following a year at Manchester United, was withdrawn from the game in the 64th minute.
The extent of the damage was unknown at the time, but the 33-year-old has since announced on social media that she will be sidelined for the long-term.
“My heart is broken: I’ve torn my ACL,” Press posted on Twitter. “Readily accepting all love, prayers, virtual hugs, dog pics, and smudging ceremonies. Love you all.”
Press had started all eight of Angel City’s NWSL games, scoring two goals and getting one assist.
ACL rehab typically lasts between 6-12 months depending on the severity of the injury and the success of any surgery or recovery programme.
Press will hope to be fully fit by the time of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, which begins in Australia and New Zealand in July next year.
Press has more than 160 appearances and over 50 goals for the USWNT since her debut in 2013 and been of World Cup winning rosters in 2015 and 2019.
