Chicago Fire center-back Wyatt Omsberg is out long-term after undergoing successful reconstructive surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left foot.
Omsberg was injured during the Fire’s 1-0 win over DC United last weekend, leaving the field deep into second-half stoppage time following an excellent individual performance.
Dr. Simon Lee M.D. performed the surgery at the Rush Oak Brook Surgery Center in Oak Brook, Illinois, on Friday. In a short statement, the Fire confirmed that Omsberg’s recovery timeline will be “determined at a later date”.
Omsberg was enjoying a breakout season with Chicago, picking up 14 consecutive MLS starts early in the 2022 season and forming a strong partnership with German defender and offseason arrival Rafael Czichos.
The 26-year-old – picked up by Minnesota United in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft – ranks first among his teammates this season for clearances, second for interceptions, and third for aerial duels won.
Omsberg’s absence begins with the Fire’s trip to the Houston Dynamo on Saturday evening.
