The Premier League resumes on Boxing Day lunchtime with a London derby as Brentford host Tottenham.

In a way, the winter hiatus came at a good time for both clubs. Brentford may have concluded the Premier League’s first act with a surprise 2-1 victory away to Manchester City but that came after a five-match winless slump.

Spurs may be fourth but groggily stumbled into the break desperately relying upon second-half turnarounds – just one of the club’s last 14 goals has come in the first 45 minutes.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Premier League’s resumption this Monday.

Brentford team news

Brentford went into the international break with a glut of injuries concentrated in the backline. Pontus Jansson (thigh) and Aaron Hickey (ankle) are on their way back – although neither featured in the recent friendly against Wolfsburg – while Kristoffer Ajer (knee) is continuing his rehabilitation.

Second-choice goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha is also recovering from an ankle injury while Shandon Baptiste is nursing an adductor strain.

Brentford Starting 11 (3-5-2): Raya; Jorgensen, Pinnock, Mee; Roerslev, Dasilva, Janelt, Norgaard, Henry; Mbeumo, Toney.
Bench: Winterbottom, Onyeka, Canos, Lewis-Potter, Wissa, Ghoddos, Crama, Yarmoliuk, Goode.

Tottenham team news

Both Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur sustained injuries during the World Cup. Brazil’s number nine limped off with a hamstring problem against Croatia in the quarter-finals and isn’t expected to feature until the second half of January.

Bentancur tore his adductor muscle in Uruguay’s final group game but has returned to training. The 25-year-old is suspended for the trip to Brentford regardless but will be available on New Year’s Day.

Oliver Skipp and Djed Spence had fevers in the week leading up to Tottenham’s Premier League return.

Three Tottenham players made it to the World Cup semi-finals. Cristian Romero got the better of Hugo Lloris in the final while Ivan Perisic started all seven matches for Croatia. It’s unlikely that the medal-winning triumvirate will reappear as swiftly as Monday.

Tottenham Starting 11 (3-4-3): Forster; Dier, Lenglet, Davies; Royal, Hojbjerg, Bissouma, Sessegnon; Kulusevski, Kane, Son.
Bench: Austin, Sarr, Sanchez, Tanganga, Doherty, Gil, Devine, Skipp, Spence.

None of Brentford’s World Cup contingent made it beyond the group stage. Thomas Frank’s side will be more well-rested and in-tact compared to Conte’s hodgepodge of successful internationals.

Even before their winter exertions, Conte lamented that “the energy” of his side was “really poor”.

The quality gap between the two squads lifts Spurs as favourites. However, they will be travelling to Brentford’s bus stop in Hounslow with some rust on the wheels and missing a number of key parts.

Prediction: Brentford 1-2 Tottenham
