The Mexican women’s national team will make history when facing Angel City on September 5 for the first annual Angelina Cup at Banc of California Stadium.
The event marks the beginning of a multi-year partnership between the Mexican Soccer Federation, Angel City FC and Soccer United Marketing to promote the unity of the sports and empowerment of women though soccer.
“We are very pleased to partner with the FMF and SUM to host this annual event, the first of its kind, featuring a national team and professional team and bringing our communities, cultures, cities and countries together,” said the ACFC President Julie Uhrman.
“We hope that Copa Angelina will grow year after year and be an example of what is possible when two organizations come together celebrating our commonalities and our differences while bringing our communities together to enjoy soccer.”
The match is set to be the first ever promoted event between a women’s professional soccer club and a national team.
“We look forward to bringing together Angel City, one of the newest professional women’s soccer clubs in the country, and the Mexico women’s national team, an established brand with a tremendous future ahead of it,” said Adrienne Barber, SUM’s Vice President of Properties.
“The Angelina Cup will have a positive impact on the Los Angeles community, celebrating the shared culture and purpose between both teams that will continue to pave the way for the growth of our sport in North America.”
The event also prioritizes the development of women’s soccer, providing players and fans the opportunity to discover new opportunities in NWSL and Liga MX Femenil.
“At the FMF we work on a solid growth strategy for women’s football based on three main pillars: attracting talent, training and development, and competition and spectacle,” said president of the Mexican Soccer Federation Yon de Luisa.
“Not only because we are convinced and proud of the potential of our players, but also because we are committed by capitalizing on the universal language of soccer as a vehicle for female empowerment. We hope to bring this unforgettable experience of our Women’s SNM to our fans this fall in Los Angeles.”
The competition between Angel City and the MWNT will be open to the public and broadcast on TelevisaUnivision family of networks throughout the US and Mexico.
