A man who is believed to have been drunk at the time of his death, has been found dead in a river at Abesim near Sunyani.

The body of 58 year old man, a Burkinabe, Pascal Moro was found dead in the Wakoa River at Wakogyamu a suburb of Abesim near Sunyani in the Bono Region on Tuesday morning.

The deceased is believed to be a Burkinabe national. He has lived in the community for the past three years. The cause of his death is yet to be established. However, co-tenants said he had a history of drinking alcohol. His bathing items and a bucket were found near the body.

Co-tenant and an eyewitness, Prophet Boampong Nicodemus known in the area as ‘Sabi’, in an interview with Daily Searchlight Newspaper revealed that he returned from town late in the evening on Monday, February 14, 2022, and did not see the deceased. But on Tuesday morning around 7:00am he went to the river to fetch water and saw a dead body in it.

According to him upon seeing the body he tried to call the police but only to realize he doesn’t have call credit so he quickly ran to town to buy credit to report the incident to the police.

Prophet Boampong noted that he realized it was his co-tenant Pascal after he helped the police to retrieve the body from the river.

He further revealed that though the cause of Pascal’s death is yet be to established, he believed the deceased fell into the river because he was drunk and tried to fetch some water for his bath that evening because they saw a rubber bucket, sponge, towel and soap at the bank of the river where he always stood to take his bath. To him, Pascal is known in the community as a drunkard who always came home drunk.

Confirming the incident, Chief Inspector Kofi Aboagye of Abesim Police Station told Collins Fosu-Appiah that they received a call around 9:00am on Tuesday, February 15, 2022 and rushed to scene only to see the lifeless body of the deceased.

He noted that the body has been deposited at Regional Hospital mortuary in Sunyani for autopsy.
