The Wenchi Imams Council in the Bono Region has requested for a separate law to regulate inheritance for Muslims
in Ghana.
They have stated that the current Intestate Succession Law under the PNDC law 111 does not apply to Muslims in
Ghana.
They made the request in a meeting with the parliamentary candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for
Wenchi constituency Boafo Kojo Frempong over the weekend at Viglosam Lodge at Wenchi in the Bono Region.
The spokesperson for the Imams at this meeting was Alhaji Umar Adam Suleiman, Country Director of Istiqaama
Muslim Mission – Ghana and an executive member of the National Hilal Conference of Muslims.
Imam Sina Abdul- Wahab, Tuba Imam and Executive Secretary to the Imams Council in an interview with the
media after a closed door meeting with Kojo Frempong revealed that Intestate Succession Law under the PNDC law
111 does not apply to Muslims hence their call for a separate to help regulate their inheritance.
He explained that succession upon the death of a Muslim whose marriage was registered under the Marriage of
Mohammedans Ordinance should be according to Islamic law.
They also requested for a 20% job allocation for Muslims in the country. This according to them was based on the
2021 Population and Housing Census, which revealed that Muslims constitutes about 20 per cent of the Ghanaian
populace.
The meeting was aimed at promoting peace and national unity ahead of the forthcoming December 7 elections.
The Council of Imams pledged Kojo Frempong that they will support him and Dr Alhaji Mahamud Bawumia with
prayers to achieve their goals.
Kojo Frempong expressed his gratitude to the council for honouring his invitation to the meeting.
In response to their request Boafo Kojo Frempong as he affectionately call, said he can only push it to become a law
when he gets the nod to represent the good people of Wenchi in Parliament.
He therefore appealed to the council to support him and Dr Alhaji Mahamud Bawumia spiritually and physically to
come out victorious in the December 7 polls to enable him lay their request before Parliament.
