The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr Osei Adutwum has called on the law enforcement agencies to deal ruthlessly with the actors in the Konogo Odumse murder case to deter future practitioners of such horrors in our schools.
Speaking at a day’s lecture on the state of Education in Ghana, the minister urged the Police to deeply investigate the murder case of the junior student who was bullied and consequently stabbed to death by two students in that school.
“I want to assure the bereaved family that justice will be fully established in this heinous crime. It is because of indiscipline,” he said.
He said that the practice of ‘Homoing’ must be a thing of the past. He directed that henceforth no junior should be treated like an outcast but properly integrated into the school system like all students.
“The system where first year students are maltreated and subjected to indecent treatment must cease forthwith. The form one student has the same right and liberty like all students and must be allowed to mingle freely like others,” he said.
The minister lamented about the incident and called for full scale and unimpeded investigation and prosecution. He asked all school authorities to strictly observe the conduct and behaviour of students under their care and rigidly apply the rules and regulations of that school.
He called on the GES to come out with new set of rules that will protect the lives and liberties of all students.
On the issue of E-Blocks, the minister assured the nation that those that are usable are being completed and furnished for use. He specifically mentioned Drobonso Community Day School where two dormitories are being built to accommodate the students as a result of its farness.
“I must say no school will be abandoned, as a result we are doing our best to recondition some existing schools including the E-Blocks as well as building new ones. This Government has put up more infrastructure than any Government in Ghana as a result of the introduction of the flagship SHS concept. President Kufour built Model schools, Mahama introduced the Community Day School and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has also introduced Free SHS with accelerated infrastructure development to give chance to every Ghanaian school going child to enjoy education and we are on course,” he said.
He advised students to comport themselves and learn hard to be able to fit into the global arena.
