The Government of Ghana has pledged to cover all travel expenses for Madam Doris Adu Gyamfi to enable her to travel to New York for the funeral of her 15-year-old son, Javits Frimpong, who was fatally shot in the Bronx. The commitment was announced by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on Saturday, October 31st, 2026.

The intervention follows high-level diplomatic efforts involving New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and US President Donald Trump to secure an emergency visa for the bereaved mother. Mr. Mamdani disclosed that President Trump agreed to grant the visa immediately during a telephone conversation, citing the urgent humanitarian need for a mother to bid farewell to her child.

Hon. Ablakwa confirmed that officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have been assigned to assist Madam Gyamfi with her visa application, with her arrival in the United States expected in the coming days as funeral arrangements continue. He noted that he had personally spoken to the family to convey government’s condolences and assurance of support. The Mahama administration has further indicated its readiness to contribute towards a dignified burial for the teenager, while working with relevant authorities in Ghana and the United States to ensure justice is served for the family.
