On Wednesday, October 22nd, 2026, on behalf of the entire Dagbon Kingdom and its traditional authority led by His Royal Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari II Mahama, the Overlord of Dagbon, the Regent of Dagbon and acting Head of the Dagbon Traditional Council, Kampakuya Naa Abdulai Yakubu Andani II, extended heartfelt appreciation to the former Vice President of Ghana and current NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his participation in the regent’s installation ceremony.
The Regent, who is the eldest son of the late Yaa Naa Yakubu Andani II and has served as caretaker of the Dagbon skin since 2002, said the gesture reflects the core values of the Dagbon Kingdom that’s respect, gratitude, unity and peaceful coexistence. He stressed that the Kingdom, which covers the entire northern enclave including Yendi as its traditional capital, Tamale, Savelugu, Tolon, Kumbungu, Gushegu, Karaga, Zabzugu and Mion, believes in maintaining cordial relations with all political leaders for the development of Dagbon and Ghana.
This comes just two days after President John Dramani Mahama announced on Monday, October 19th, 2026, when Kampakuya Naa paid a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House, that government has secured €323 million for the Northern Ghana Water and Sanitation Project to end the perennial water crisis in Yendi, Tamale and Damongo. The package, finalized in Bangkok by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson on the sidelines of the IMF/World Bank Meetings, comprises a €225 million concessional loan from the European Investment Bank and €98 million in grants, €68 million from the EU and €30 million from the Dutch government, expected to benefit 1.5 million people.

Analysts say today’s appreciation to Dr. Bawumia, a royal of Mamprugu and son of the late Northern statesman Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia who played a central role in the 2019 Dagbon peace roadmap that led to the enskinment of Yaa Naa Abukari II after 17 years of chieftaincy conflict, shows the Dagbon Kingdom’s balanced fatherly leadership. By commending both President Mahama for the water project and Dr. Bawumia for his long-standing service to Dagbon, the Traditional Council under Yaa Naa Abukari II is reinforcing its role as a unifying authority above partisan politics. Dr. Bawumia also attended the final funeral rites of the late Dagomba Chief of Accra, Alhaji Abdul Kadir Tahir, in September 2026
