Benedict Amelorku has been elected as the 60th President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) after a fiercely contested poll.
The former General Secretary of the Union secured the highest votes at the 60th Annual Delegates Congress held over the weekend, beating three other contenders in a process that extended deep into the night. The congress drew over 1,300 accredited delegates from public universities, private universities, colleges of education, and senior high schools.
His election marks a steady rise through the student leadership ranks, having previously served at the institutional and national levels. He now succeeds Rashid Ibrahim as head of the largest student body in Ghana.
He is expected to be sworn in this week together with other newly elected national executives to steer the affairs of the Union for the 2025/2026 academic year.
