The Adenta Abokobi Divisional Police Command has arrested a police officer following a shooting incident at Ritz Junction that left two people with gunshot injuries.
The incident occurred on Sunday, October 11, 2026, during a confrontation between General Sergeant Mathew Aboase, who is stationed at the Madina Police Station, and some members of the Ritz Junction Taxi Drivers Union.
In a statement signed by Accra Regional Police Public Affairs Head, Chief Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the Command disclosed that the confrontation escalated after the officer allegedly threatened the drivers with his service pistol, prompting some of them to attempt to disarm him.
According to the police account, the firearm discharged during the ensuing struggle, striking two people who were in the vicinity.
“During the exchange, the drivers attempted to disarm the officer who allegedly threatened them with his pistol. In the process, the weapon accidentally discharged, resulting in gunshot injuries to two persons who were nearby,” the statement said.
The two injured persons, identified as Doe Asinyo and 34 year old Gifty Nyimahen, were immediately transported to Madina Pentecost Hospital, where they received medical attention.
Mr Asinyo suffered a gunshot wound to his left thigh. Medical personnel treated him and subsequently discharged him from the facility.
Ms Nyimahen sustained a gunshot injury to her abdomen. She was initially admitted to Madina Pentecost Hospital before being referred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for further medical care.
Following the incident, the Adenta Abokobi Divisional Police Command arrested Sergeant Aboase, who remains in custody as investigations continue. His service pistol has also been secured by the police as evidence to support the ongoing inquiry.
The circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including the events leading to the alleged threat and the subsequent discharge of the firearm, are expected to be examined as part of the investigation.
The Command assured the public that the matter would be handled in accordance with the law, stating that “appropriate action will be taken in accordance with the law”.
The incident has drawn attention to the circumstances under which the confrontation unfolded and the need for a thorough investigation to establish the facts and determine any applicable responsibility.
Until the investigation is concluded, the police account of the events remains subject to further findings.
