The opposition New Patriotic Party has cleared all 47 aspirants who submitted themselves for consideration in the party’s 2026 National Officers Election, bringing the vetting stage of the internal electoral process to a close and paving the way for the next phase of the contest.
The National Officers Election Vetting Committee conducted the exercise from August 31 to September 3, 2026, examining candidates seeking to occupy nine key positions within the party’s national leadership structure. Following an assessment of the documentation submitted by the aspirants, their eligibility and their responses during the vetting process, the committee recommended all 47 candidates as qualified and suitable to contest their respective positions.
The decision means that every aspirant who successfully completed the nomination process and appeared before the vetting committee has been approved to proceed with the election, subject to the remaining procedures prescribed under the party’s electoral regulations.
The National Vice Chairperson position has emerged as the most heavily contested race, attracting 13 cleared aspirants. The National Organiser position follows with eight candidates, while six aspirants have secured clearance to compete for the National Youth Organiser position.
The National Nasara Organiser contest has five cleared candidates, whereas the positions of National Chairman, General Secretary and National Treasurer each have four aspirants competing for the respective offices.
The National Women’s Organiser position has two approved candidates, while the National Communications Director race has only one aspirant. Altogether, the nine categories account for the 47 candidates cleared by the party.
The completion of the vetting process now shifts attention to the balloting stage, which has been scheduled for Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at the NPP headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra.
The balloting will determine the placement of the various aspirants on the ballot paper ahead of the national officers election. The party has directed the candidates to participate personally or through duly authorised representatives, while the specific times assigned to the respective positions are expected to be communicated directly to the aspirants.
The National Officers Elections Committee, chaired by Frederick Opare Ansah, said the successful completion of the vetting exercise represented an important step in preparations for the internal election and expressed appreciation to members of the vetting committee, the aspirants and the wider public for their cooperation.
The committee further reaffirmed its intention to oversee the remaining stages of the electoral process in a manner that is transparent, orderly and credible, while urging aspirants, their supporters and party members to conduct themselves in ways that protect the unity and integrity of the NPP.
The development follows the closure of nominations on August 29, when 47 of the 50 individuals who had purchased nomination forms successfully completed the filing process. Three prospective candidates did not proceed to the vetting stage after failing to complete their nominations.
With all 47 aspirants now cleared, competition for the NPP’s national leadership positions is expected to intensify as candidates turn their attention to campaigning, delegate engagement and securing favourable positions on the ballot paper.
The September 9 balloting will therefore constitute the immediate next milestone in the party’s preparations, as the NPP moves closer to determining the individuals who will occupy its national executive positions and steer the affairs of the opposition party through the next phase of its political development.
