The suspects have been identified as 25 year old carpenter Adjei Abdulai and 22 year old student Issah Mahama. Their arrests followed police investigations into an alleged attack on the victim, identified as Yibonwura, after he was accused of stealing sheanuts.

According to preliminary information gathered by investigators, the young man was subjected to a severe physical assault after the accusation was made and subsequently died from injuries allegedly sustained during the attack.

The incident came to public attention after a video purportedly showing the assault circulated widely across social media, prompting the Savannah Regional Police Command to commence investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, August 26, the Police Command confirmed that two suspects had been taken into custody in connection with the alleged killing.

The two men are currently assisting investigators as the Police work to establish the events that preceded the attack, identify all individuals who may have participated in the incident and determine the circumstances that resulted in the victim’s death.

The Police have also confirmed that a third suspect allegedly connected to the incident remains at large.

A manhunt has consequently been launched to locate the outstanding suspect, while investigative teams continue efforts to gather evidence and establish the full sequence of events surrounding the alleged lynching.

The Savannah Regional Police Command has further assured the public that its investigation will not be limited to the two individuals already arrested. Authorities say every person found to have been connected to the alleged offence will be identified and dealt with in accordance with the law.

The case has once again drawn attention to the dangers associated with mob attacks and the need for suspected criminal conduct to be reported to law enforcement authorities rather than being addressed through violent reprisals.

As investigations continue, the Police are expected to determine the precise circumstances under which Yibonwura was attacked, establish the respective roles of those allegedly involved and pursue the outstanding suspect whose whereabouts remain unknown.

The two arrested individuals remain in police custody as investigators work towards completing the inquiry, while authorities have appealed for information that could assist in locating the third suspect and bringing all persons connected to the alleged killing before the appropriate legal authorities.
