New Patriotic Party General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua has formally submitted his nomination to contest the party’s forthcoming national executive elections, signalling his intention to retain the position as the governing opposition party prepares for a major internal leadership contest.

Mr Kodua presented his nomination forms on the second day of the filing period, officially entering the race to remain General Secretary of the NPP.

Speaking after submitting his documents, the incumbent General Secretary expressed confidence in his bid and said the submission had been undertaken in accordance with the timetable and procedures established by the party’s National Elections Committee.

“As well articulated, per your procedures and timelines, I contacted your secretariat and it was agreed that today will be the day that you will receive me in submitting my forms as I seek to maintain my position as General Secretary of our party,” he said.

Mr Kodua also pledged to conduct his campaign with decorum and respect for the party’s internal electoral procedures as the contest progresses. He assured the National Elections Committee that his campaign would be guided by civility and would not undermine the integrity of the electoral process.

His decision to seek another term comes as the NPP prepares to elect a new set of national executives who will be expected to steer the party through its organisational restructuring and preparations towards the 2028 general election.

The position of General Secretary remains one of the most influential roles within the party’s national administration, with the office responsible for coordinating key organisational activities, supporting party structures across the country and contributing to the implementation of decisions adopted by the party leadership.

Mr Kodua’s nomination therefore sets the stage for another internal contest for the position as other interested aspirants are expected to complete the nomination process within the period announced by the party.

The NPP has scheduled its National Executive Election for October 3, 2026, when delegates will vote to determine the individuals who will occupy the party’s various national executive positions.

Before the election, aspirants will undergo a formal vetting process between August 31 and September 3, 2026. The exercise is expected to provide the party with an opportunity to assess the eligibility of candidates before the final list of contestants is confirmed.

With the filing period now underway, attention is expected to focus increasingly on the competing candidates, their organisational records and the strategies they intend to adopt as they seek the support of delegates.

For Mr Kodua, the immediate objective is to secure approval through the vetting process before commencing the next phase of his campaign to retain the General Secretary position.

His commitment to a disciplined campaign also comes as the NPP seeks to manage its internal competition while maintaining organisational cohesion ahead of the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections.
