The confidence from the experienced goalkeeper comes at a critical moment for Ghanaian football, as the Black Stars prepare to shift attention from their disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup to the upcoming AFCON qualifying series, which begins in September this year.

Ghana’s failure to progress to the knockout stages of the global tournament has triggered renewed discussions about the future direction of the national team, with supporters demanding improved performances, stronger consistency and a return to the competitive standards that historically defined the Black Stars on the African continent.

However, Ati Zigi believes the disappointment of the World Cup can become a motivating factor rather than a setback, arguing that the emergence of a younger generation of players provides Ghana with the foundation needed to rebuild and compete successfully.

Speaking in an interview with Sporty FM, the goalkeeper maintained that the current squad contains enough talent and ambition to overcome the challenges ahead and achieve qualification for the 2027 continental championship.

“If you look at the players we have, I think we have what it takes to qualify for the AFCON next year. These are young and hungry players,” Ati Zigi said.

The goalkeeper, who features for Swiss club FC St. Gallen, further expressed optimism that Ghana would not only qualify for the tournament but also make a significant impact if they secure their place among Africa’s elite football nations.

“I believe we can make a statement with what we have as a group in the AFCON next year,” he added.

Ghana’s return to the Africa Cup of Nations has become a major objective for the national team following the country’s unexpected failure to qualify for the 2025 edition of the tournament hosted in Morocco. That absence brought an end to Ghana’s long uninterrupted participation in Africa’s biggest football competition and represented one of the most disappointing moments in the modern history of the Black Stars.

For decades, Ghana had established itself as one of Africa’s most consistent footballing nations, regularly appearing at AFCON tournaments and producing memorable performances, including four continental titles and several deep runs in recent competitions. The failure to qualify for the previous tournament therefore intensified calls for structural reforms, improved player development and a renewed competitive mentality within the national setup.

The road back, however, will not be straightforward.

Ghana has been placed in Group C of the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign alongside familiar West African rivals Ivory Coast, The Gambia and Somalia. The group presents a demanding challenge, particularly because of the intensity of regional football competition and the need for Ghana to secure consistent results throughout the qualification process.

The rivalry with Ivory Coast adds further significance to the group, as both nations have historically competed among Africa’s strongest football countries. The Gambia has also emerged as a more competitive force in recent years, while Somalia will seek to cause surprises against more established opponents.

Ati Zigi’s confidence reflects the broader rebuilding efforts being undertaken by the Ghana Football Association and the Black Stars technical team following recent setbacks. Authorities are seeking to create a more balanced squad that combines experienced players with emerging talents capable of sustaining Ghana’s competitiveness over the long term.

The current generation of Black Stars players has been viewed as a transitional group, with several young footballers gradually assuming greater responsibility on the international stage. The challenge facing the team will be transforming individual talent into collective success while restoring the confidence of supporters who have grown increasingly frustrated with inconsistent performances.

Ati Zigi’s message is therefore not only a statement of personal belief but also an appeal for renewed faith in the rebuilding process.

The goalkeeper believes the hunger among the younger members of the squad can become Ghana’s greatest advantage as the country seeks qualification for the tournament scheduled to be jointly hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.

For the Black Stars, securing a place at the 2027 AFCON will represent more than just participation. It will provide an opportunity to restore national pride, rebuild confidence and demonstrate that Ghana remains capable of competing at the highest level of African football.

As the qualification campaign approaches, Ati Zigi and his teammates will be expected to turn optimism into results. The coming months will determine whether Ghana’s new generation can successfully begin another chapter in the country’s proud football history.
